Choosing And Styling Your Console Table

A perfect balance of style and function, console tables are one of the most useful pieces when it comes to interior design. Originating from the Latin term ‘consolidare’, meaning ‘to strengthen’, that’s exactly what they’ll do when used correctly as part of a scheme. Styled well, they’ll help to define the look and feel of a space; placed well, in hallways or entrances, they’ll create a seamless transition between rooms.

From rustic to luxe, console tables come in a myriad of different styles, so taking the time to find the right one for your home is key. Slender two-tiered designs can be perfect if you are tight on space, while a console with an ornate base can add instant glamour.

To get you started, we’ve rounded-up some of our top tips to help you choose and style the right console for you.

Appreciating the ‘less is more’ look

If you’re a fan of understated luxury, then a simple design crafted from stunning natural materials such as marble will offer an elevated and elegant look. Minimal frames with smooth surfaces such as chrome or glass can also add visual impact or bring a subtle drama to any room.

Crescent shaped tops can also work beautifully, with the gentle curve bringing a softness to the overall look and feel.

The styling of these designs should balance with weight of the console and less is often more when it comes to accessories. A few carefully chosen, but nonetheless eye-catching pieces will complement a simple glass lamp or a set of candlesticks.

The best of both

If you’re looking to make more of a statement with your design, consoles featuring intricate metalwork or those crafted from gorgeously weathered woods will bring character and charm. Larger styles often offer storage solutions too, whether in the form of drawers or additional shelves, so they’re as useful as they are beautiful.

Make the most of this combination by using the top surface to showcase accessories and objects, whilst using the spaces which sit out of sight (or eye line) to stow everything from shoes to table linens and beyond.

When styling, don’t forget to take height into account as this will help to ensure that the whole arrangement feels balanced. Tall table lamps, sculptures or vases of evergreen foliage such as eucalyptus, are great for this and will help to open up the space by drawing the eye up.

The finishing touches

Mirrors and console tables go hand in hand and will create a natural focal point when styled together.  Round mirrors will contrast nicely with designs that feature clean lines and angles but ensure that the diameter is never wider than the length of the console.

If you’re stuck for styling ideas, stacked books with the spines facing out make a brilliant finishing touch and can be used to add colour as well.

Above all, have fun with it and keep mixing it up until you find a combination that works for you.
